In 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared with 239 passengers and crew and has never been found. At that time, Ken was in the hospital with severe head and spinal injuries. Due to the pain and strong medications, Ken had very realistic dreams about the missing plane and posted videos online. Although he clarified that the videos were drug-induced dreams, many believed Ken was revealing what really happened to the plane. In the Air Force, Ken had been trained to repair aircraft communication and navigation systems, including transponders that track planes. Ken knew how to hide an aircraft in flight, which probably made the dreams feel all the more real.
One day, Ken saw a CNN interview with a woman named Sarah Bajc, whose boyfriend was on the missing flight. She was distraught, and when asked if she would receive compensation from the airline for her loss, she said she had no idea if she qualified. As of 2026, the families of the missing passengers still have not been fully compensated, as efforts remain incomplete over a decade after the disappearance on March 8, 2014.
During the interview, Sarah mentioned her boyfriend was an IBM engineer. Ken was deeply affected by this because he had also worked as an IBM engineer after serving in the Air Force, where he helped design the first IBM personal computers, such as the IBM XT and PS/2. Once an IBMer, always an IBMer, and Ken wanted to help Sarah get the compensation she deserved.
Ken’s wife, Darlene, was a vice president at Fox Cable Networks, and he asked her to send an email to Sarah using her Fox email to verify her legitimacy. In her email, Darlene asked if Sarah wanted Ken and Darlene to set up a GoFundMe campaign if she received no compensation. The next day, Darlene was fired and escorted off the Fox lot, where she had worked for 24 years. Her crime: sending a single personal email via the Fox servers.
Darlene sued Fox for wrongful termination, which was settled quickly because data from the Fox IT department revealed that over 97% of Fox employees had sent one or more personal emails via the Fox servers, including Fox owner Rupert Mardoch, his children, and the woman who had fired Darlene.
